My IS Day

Information systems are things that people use every day. And like every other person who uses these, I'm sure the Internet is the most common.

To be honest, unless I'm doing school work the Internet and Text messaging are probably the only information system I use daily. The internet is perfect, it's everything you'll ever need and more; it's basically the knowledge of the whole world packed into one glorious website... www.google.ca. Like all information systems the internet has 5 major components: Hardware, Software, Data, Procedures, and People.

  1. Hardware: Of course, in order to access the internet you're going to need a vessel. Whether it be a computer, a cell phone or other means of media device this doesn't matter; however, what does matter is that this device has a way to access the internet. Pretty much every one has a network provider (e.i. Bell, Rogers etc.) these providers are the only access to the internet.

  2. Software: WiFi is a technology that lets media devices access the internet in certain areas for free, all laptops have this; most new phones and iPods have this. Browsers are another vital piece of software needed to use the internet at its full capacity, there are many browsers: Firefox, Explorer, and Google Chrome are the most popular ones.

  3. Data: Data; of course is the most important thing about the internet. Almost ALL the data of the world is floating around cyber space somewhere.

  4. Procedures: The only procedures I could think of that are needed to run the internet are stated above, get a computer, get a service provider, download a browser. Bingo.

  5. People: Need this be explained? People are responsible for uploading information, and searching/using it.

The internet, what a beautiful place.

Ciao!
